Cape Town to Kruger

Part 1 - Getting there

When planning a trip from Cape Town to the Kruger National Park, two things matter most: time and budget. If you have the flexibility, breaking the journey into shorter legs with stopovers in South Africa’s most scenic parks makes road‑tripping the ultimate adventure.

We will cover this option in a future blog post on our 2024 trip to Sun City and the Pilanesberg.

But if your schedule is tight, flying into Mbombela (Nelspruit) or Hoedspruit opens up an opportunity to experience this world‑famous and much‑loved national park.

This option allows you to wake up in Cape Town and light a fire with sundowners in the Kruger National park that evening.

Although flying into OR Tambo in Johannesburg and driving from there is possible, choosing Mbombela or Hoedspruit cuts out 5 to 6 hours in travel time.

• Hoedspruit: Hoedspruit Airport (Eastgate Airport, HDS) 

Hoedspruit gives you access to the southwest of the park, specifically the Orpen Gate

• Mbombela: Kruger Mpumalanga International Airport, (MQP)

  Fly into Mbombela to access the south of the park, e.g. Malelane and Crocodile Bridge Gates

We chose to fly into Mbombela and access the Park through the Malelane Gate with Biyamiti Restcamp being our first stop.

Once you have collected your hired car at the airport you can stock up on supplies in Mbombela (Nelspruit) or in Malelane, near the gate.

In Malelane (closest to the gate)

• Spar Supermarket (Malelane)

  • Full grocery selection including fresh produce, meat, and essentials.

  • Popular with self‑drive safari visitors stocking up before entering Kruger.

• Spar Tops Bottle Store

  • Located in the same complex as Spar.

  • Wide range of beer, wine, and spirits.

• Local Butchers & Biltong Shops

  • Recommended for fresh cuts and traditional South African biltong.

👉 Distance to Malelane Gate: Less than 5 km (about 5–10 minutes by car).

In Mbombela (Nelspruit, ~60 km away)

• Ilanga Mall

  • Large shopping center with fashion, electronics, restaurants, and supermarkets.

  • Ideal if you want a broader retail experience before heading into Kruger.

• Crossings Centre & Riverside Mall

  • Additional options for larger shopping trips.

👉 Distance to Malelane Gate: ±60 km (about 45–50 minutes drive along the N4).

Part 2 - Biyamiti

Biyamiti is easily accessible from Kruger Mpumalanga International Airport and is one of our favourite camps in the Park.

Biyamiti Bushveld Camp

Biyamiti takes its name from the Mbiyamiti River, whose Shangaan meaning — ‘a fence of sharp wooden spears’ — perfectly captures the camp’s secluded, protective atmosphere amid Kruger’s wild heart.

• Location: Southern Kruger National Park, along the Mbiyamiti River.

• Atmosphere: Secluded, intimate bush camp with limited access (only residents allowed).

• Wildlife: Excellent sightings of elephants, buffalo, rhino, and predators like leopard and wild dogs.

• Vegetation: Dense woodland with Wild Fig, Jackalberry, Tamboti, and Marula trees.
